Highlights of Olympias' New York Voyage
- Olympias will feature in several events in New York Harbor, including a celebratory row around the Statue of Liberty, to celebrate the connection between triremes and American ideals of freedom and democracy.
- The Seaport Museum New York has expressed interest in providing docking space for Olympias and hosting a related exhibit on Athenian maritime history, featuring artifacts and items on loan from the Greek government.
- Alan Shapiro, W.H. Vickers Professor of Archaeology, Johns Hopkins University, and Ford Weiskittel of Trireme Trust USA, will curate the exhibit.
- An academic conference on the historical role and significance of the triremes is being planned.
- The public will be welcome to visit Olympias while the ship is repaired to full sea-worthy condition.
- A crew will be trained and sea-trials held to test the ship’s capabilities. A major goal for the sea-trials is to set the modern sprint speed record for a trireme.
